About me

Hi, there. I'm Kapu (she/they). I'm a Kanaka ʻŌiwi, Mixed Heritage, Queer, Registered Counselor Associate with a Gestalt and Somatics background. I hail from Maui, Hawai'i, and am currently based in Portland, Oregon. Outside of therapy, I have an eclectic background that includes creative movement, non-profit work, teaching, and filmmaking. My route to becoming a therapist has been one of twists and turns, but I consider every odd job and unexpected endeavor a precious part of the development of the therapist I am today. As a therapist, I am passionate about fostering a genuine and engaging space (with a sprinkle of humor) for adult individuals and relationships. I’m game for creating room to explore what is present while cultivating awareness.

Regarding my education, I obtained a Master’s Degree in Counseling with a focus on relationship and family therapy from Portland State University. My major coursework has included: multicultural counseling, group dynamics, child and family development, and advanced systemic perspectives. I am supervised by Roza Skenderova, MS, LPC and Pamela Ganem, MS, LPC, NCC. Additionally, I have sought training and education on anti-oppressive counseling for LGBTQ+ communities and trauma-informed services. I am also a member of the Gestalt Training Center of Seattle where I am trained in individual and couples therapy from a contemporary Gestalt perspective.

IRL:

I’m all about scrolling through reels, lights off, ugly-laughing in bed, just a low-lit face in the dark enjoying the silliest parts of humanity. On my days off, I’m all about my two rescue pups with tons of energy & slow mornings with a good mocha (yep, I’m that basic). In my social life, I’m the friend who shows up with a bag of random wigs for dinner parties and insists we wear them like hats—just to keep things interesting!

How I Work

authenticity, curiosity, and care

I draw from Contemporary Gestalt Therapy and Somatic Therapy, approaches that emphasize awareness in the present moment and the connection between mind and body (and hey, we’re actually all body). I am drawn to these experiential approaches because they allow us to move beyond words and intellectual understanding, tapping more fully into the body, emotions, and imagination. These methods offer a unique way to access deeper layers of awareness and create new experiences that can expand choice and possibility.

As a therapist, I am actively engaged and often direct. I believe that therapy is a relational space, and I approach our work together with authenticity, curiosity, and care. I am not a "blank slate" or a passive observer—even in the moments I am quiet, I see our therapeutic relationship as a dynamic and collaborative process. Together, we will explore your experience, how you’ve creatively kept yourself alive and safe, and maybe even experiment with new ways of being that honor who you are, and your unique needs and values.

My aim is to support you in deepening your awareness with the hope of restoring your sense of agency, and opening the door to new possibilities for growth and healing.

If this lands with you, let’s connect and see if we’re a good fit for working together.
